How to spend the perfect Saturday in Coburg
Coburg is an amazing suburb that is only getting better. Here, a rich immigrant background has made for a diverse community – and some incredible dining options. With cafes and shopping, excellent public transport and a handful of great parks, Coburg ticks every box.
Keen to check out it? Here’s how we’d spend our Saturday.
10:00 – Ever had breakfast in prison?
Melbourne is all about the repurposed space, like the Thornbury Picture House, built in a former motor garage. And our city loves to dine in unusual spots; none more unusual, however, than a prison, which is where you can enjoy top-quality, ethically sourced fare at the Glass Den. Stop in for breakfast to start your day and don’t miss their signature Hot Cakes.
11:00 – Tour the rest of the facility
While you’re there, walk around the rest of the prison to see where Australia’s most hardened criminals were incarcerated, including Ned Kelly (who’s buried on site). If there’s a guided tour on, be sure to join in to learn what really went on behind the bluestone walls of Pentridge Prison.
12:00 – Stop by the Coburg Farmers Market
For something a bit more uplifting, hit the Coburg Farmers Market and grab a coffee or fresh juice from one of the local vendors. The market is dog-friendly and located at the Coburg Primary School, where the kids can play on the playground.
1:00 – Grab a picnic lunch from Paninoteca
In Coburg, you’re spoiled with many great parks, including:
- Harmony Park,
- Coburg Lake Reserve,
- Bridges Reserve.
Pick your favourite and stock up your picnic basket (or takeaway box) from Paninoteca, a next-level Italian sandwich shop where you can indulge in menu options like loaded meatball fries and scotch fillet paninis.
2:30 See what’s on at the Coburg Library
Next stop, the Coburg Library, a book lover’s hub that frequently runs kid-friendly events and hosts social interest groups.
3:30 – Check out Coburg’s best shopping
When it comes to great shopping, the northside is the place to be – and Coburg is no exception. Here, you get specialty shops, thrift stores and everything in between. Some of our favourite retailers include:
- Mary Mary Studio, a flower shop specialising in gorgeous arrangements.
- Present Story, a gift and homewares emporium packed with unique pieces,
- The Deli Coburg, a fine food shop with a distinctive ambience.
5:00 – Go back in time at the Coburg Drive-In
Tune in your FM radio, it’s time to visit a true north icon, the Coburg Drive-In. Open since 1965, this cinematic experience can’t be beat – nor can the on-site retro diner!
7:00 – Finish the day with dinner at Antalya
We hope you didn’t fill up on popcorn because there’s still dinner to go. Antalya is one of Coburg’s top restaurants and the perfect place to score delicious Turkish food for an affordable price. Plus, it’s BYO, so be sure to pick up a bottle on the way.
