Footscray
Footscray, 5 km west of the CBD, is characterised by a diverse, multicultural central shopping area, reflecting the ethnic diversity of the population. Once a heavy industrial area, Footscray has increasingly become gentrified by younger people seeking affordable period housing close to Melbourne city centre.
Many former industrial sites have become modern housing developments. Home to the Footscray Market, Little Saigon (a market with mainly Asian produce), and many ethnic restaurants, Footscray also has the second largest botanical garden in Victoria (Footscray Park) and educational facilities include state and private primary schools, secondary colleges, kindergartens and two campuses of Victoria University.
